Motor Trend Car Of The Year : Mid-Engined Chevrolet Corvette Bags The Title!

The ‘2020 Motor Trend Car Of The Year’ title finds the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette Stingray a top spot among the world’s coolest machines, making it a third-time achievement for the Corvette family.

We now have the year’s ‘Motor Trend Car Of The Year’ officially declared and feel no wonder seeing the all-new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette Stingray getting adorned with the title. I mean, that car just DESERVES it! The production mid-engine Chevy Corvette had hit the markets earlier this year and had since been amassing huge jaw drops from enthusiasts from around the globe. Shortly ahead of its debut, the car has now bagged the ‘Motor Trend Car Of The Year’ title, a much-coveted recognition presented annually ahead of the LA Auto Show.

It seems Motor Trend, the automotive video and magazine contents giant has been greatly impressed by the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette from GM. An article on the website states that it was in September 2019 that the editors there had gotten their hands on the car for the first time. Weeks of rigorous testing of the car against its rivals followed, finally ending up in getting it adorned with the title.

“We’ve been waiting so long for this car that, climbing in, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning,” Detroit editor Alisa Priddle told Motor Trend. “I didn’t care if it was going to be good or bad, I just wanted to unwrap the present and drive it.”

It was Motor Trend who had first broke the news of a possible mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette back in August 2014. And finally, when the car was actually out, it could easily impress them, as it could with various others, with the 376 cubic inches (6.2 litres) cam in block small block V8 and the epic manoeuvrability on offer.

The removable-roof car is capable of hitting the 60mph mark in 2.8 seconds ( jaw drops guaranteed!), all but with a QUIET cabin! Oh, by the way, the 0-60 figures are on par with a Ferrari 812 superfast! Yes, that sounds as SERIOUS as it actually is! The Chevy C8 Corvette is also being praised for the stiffness of its chassis attachment points.

“The C8 represents the biggest step-change since the original Acura NSX in terms of being a usable everyday mid-engine supercar,” Motor Trend‘s international bureau chief Angus MacKenzie said. “It brings the Corvette closer to the Porsche 911 in terms of being an attainable and credible 24/7 supercar than any time since the ’60s.”

The all-new Corvette also does away with the nasty looking plastics and the air of cheapness inside the cabin that used to exist in the previous generations. The latest generation boasts of a neatly designed cabin that feels plush in every sense. The quality of materials now used inside the Corvette would stand out and in the limelight any day. The steering wheel is great to hold on to and now has a squared design too. On fronts of ride quality, comfort and in-cabin serenity, there are absolutely no compromises on the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Let me now put an end to this story quoting MotorTrend Editor-in-Chief Edward Loh. “We have been looking forward to the arrival of the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette for so long, that you’d think there is no way it could live up to the weight of expectations, but the all-new C8 Corvette epitomizes what it means to be MotorTrend’s 2020 Car of the Year,” he said.

“Corvette delivers stunning design and world-class performance, around an exotic mid-ship layout, yet it remains a truly livable grand touring sports car, all at an almost unbelievable price point. Our 2020 Car of the Year is the one that democratizes the supercar – the Chevrolet Corvette.”

You can find Motor Trend’s original post on the results here. The titles also had the 2020 Kia Telluride winning the best SUV title and RAM heavy duty taking the spot for the best truck.
